If I were able to do this deal I would select the cheapest plan ($3.99). In the end, you get paid $21.01 to have 4 movie rentals delivered to your home, these types of deals are my favorite!

Despite the extra hour from daylight savings (I love falling back), I didn’t have time to calculate my end of October financial status update or look into my financial goals. Be on the look out in the next day or two for my financial status and goals updates. Part of the reason why I didn’t have time is because I went to the library and got my first library card in about ten years.

I am extremely excited about all of the benefits that my public library offers. Common sense tells you that books are free for checking out. Also, they have magazines, newspapers, free internet, DVDs and CDs. When I was younger, my library had VHS rentals for free, however, they never had any of the good/new movies. I quickly perused the collection of DVDs and was very happy with the selection of both new and old movies. I will be doing a more intensive search of the DVD section prior to making a final decision on whether or not I want to sign up for Netflix or Blockbuster Total Access. The only down side to renting DVDs is that they can only be rented for three days.

Libraries have become super convenient since my last experience. The internet has made searching for books extremely easy. I was able to search the library’s catalog prior to even going to the library. My next trip to the library will most likely be less than 5 minutes. I will already know if the book is in stock and where it’s located before even going. Also, they provide an email service that sends a reminder when a book will be due, which will surely cut down on late fees.

My library has a bunch of other random benefits. The library has speakers and seminars on a wide variety of topics. In the near future there will a speaker who was in the Pentagon during 9/11, a speaker detailing high-tech TVs and a yoga workshop.

I’m looking forward to taking advantage of my public library. Now that my move is completed and I’m settled into my condo, I will be able to do more reading. I’m hoping to increase both my personal finance reading and my pleasure reading (sometimes they’re the same), so be on the lookout for some book reviews and visit your local public library, you’re already paying for it with your tax dollars.

I have spent a lot of time reading other personal finance blogs, my favorites can be found in my blogroll at the right-hand side of the page. It seems as though most of the personal finance blogs that I read focus a lot of time on debt reduction. I fortunately do not have a large amount of terrible (credit card) risk, so I have been able to focus my attention on saving for a condo down payment. The most important part of that previous sentence though is that I am saving, furiously for that matter.

In order to save for my down payment I have been living very frugally. In order to save and still enjoy my early post-college years, I have had to resort to finding as many good deals as possible. I have previously blogged about discounted restaurant coupons, which is one example of the deals I have explored. I have found numerous ways to save money on entertainment as long as you are willing to hold off on the latest fads for a few months to a few years.

One frugal form of entertainment that I enjoy is going to a “cheapie” movie theater. They offer movies on the big screen after they leave the regular movie theater, but before they come out on DVD for rent/purchase. A movie ticket is $2 six days a week and HALF-PRICE for $1 on Tuesdays. The only issue with this strategy of movie watching is you have to wade through the old people if you try to see a movie before 8 o’clock. The key to taking advantage of a cheapie movie theater is to wait a month or two after the blockbusters hit the big screen. If you can hold off on the summer blockbusters for two-months you get a great savings and still get to see Will Ferrell on the big screen in all his glory.

If you don’t want to waste the gas to go out and find a cheapie theater you can always wait for the DVD to come out for rent. The best and most frugal way to rent movies is through redbox. It’s an online service to reserve DVDs at a local redbox location, there’s one at my local Jewel. You pay $1 for a one night DVD rental. One negative about redbox is that you have to use a credit or debit card. There are always numerous promotional codes floating around the internet for free DVD rentals that work at redboxes. There’s no better deal than free.

Due to my athletic and academic pursuits in college I fell behind in my video gaming for four years. I’ve discovered that falling behind on technology is amazing for spending habits. Instead of buying new Xbox 360 games or Playstation 3 games for $60, I’m buying used Playstation 2 games for $10. I’m also finding out that holding out on buying a television is paying dividends. It seems that improvements to televisions, 120 Hz and 1080p, are coming out regularly, which drops the price of older models significantly. The moral of the story is if you can wait for technology by about a year, you can save significant wads of cash that can be socked away for future fun.

I haven’t been eating out as much as I would like to recently. Since I started saving for my condo down payment I have pretty much reduced my eating out to fast food for lunch and birthdays/anniversaries for dinner. I stumbled upon a super awesome deal that should enable me to eat out more often and still save money. Restaurant.com regularly sells $25 gift certificates for $10 and $10 gift certificates for $3. You just enter your zip code or state and hit GO. Local restaurants that participate with gift certificates are listed. Most of the certificates come with minimum purchase requirements, but it’s still a great deal.

Additionally, towards the ends of the month you can usually find codes that increase the value of the deal. Currently there is a deal for 80% off the original gift certificate when you enter the code “first”. The $25 gift certificates come to $2 and the $10 dollar gift certificates come to $0.60. Eating out is always more enjoyable when most of the meal is free!

I’m always on the lookout for deals and free stuff. Deals are great, but a lot of times you end up buying things you don’t need just because it’s a great deal. If you fit into the category of people who buys things just cause they are a great deal, but what you’re buying isn’t completely necessary, then I don’t recommend you tempt yourself by searching out deals. Free things, on the other hand, are FREE. Everyone loves free stuff.

I recently stumbled upon a free sample of Degree Deodorant for men. All you have to do is enter your name, shipping address, e-mail and birthday. Unclick the box that says “Yes, I would like to receive such information and offers only from Degree® Deodorant” if you don’t want to spam your e-mail. Also, you can always start a new e-mail address through gmail to enter into all of your free stuff submissions if you don’t want to clutter your day-to-day e-mail. All you have to do now is click submit and your arm pits are only 6-8 weeks away from smelling so fresh and so clean for FREE.
